The first of the Sharingan's powers is being able to see the chakra flow. The Sharingan can tell if a person is under a genjutsu because the person's chakra flow would be irregular.
The Sharingan's second-most prominent ability grants the user an incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to easily recognize genjutsu and different forms of chakra, though not to the same extent as the Byakugan. This also allows the user to pick up on subtle details, enabling them to read lip movements
or mimic something like pencil movements.As the Sharingan evolves, gaining more tomoe seals, this ability extends to being able to track fast-moving objects before finally giving some amount of predictive capabilities to the user. However, even though the user may be able to see an attack or know it is coming, their body may not have time to react.
The Sharingan's third and most well-known ability is that it grants the user the ability to memorize any technique that he or she witnesses, apart from other
Kekkei Genkai techniques. The user can memorize
ninjutsu,
genjutsu, and
taijutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own, or even modify them to create his own new techniques, much like
Sasuke Uchiha's
Lion Combo. In order to reproduce a copied jutsu, however, one must have the necessary skill or ability to perform them. A prime example is
Rock Lee's brand of taijutsu. While Sasuke was able to copy some of Lee's moves, they put a much more significant strain on him since he hasn't trained nearly as much as Lee has. In addition to physical skill and kekkei genkai techniques, the Sharingan cannot reproduce jutsu dependent on other factors, such as
summons that the user has not signed a contract with.
The Sharingan's final commonly-used ability is capable of inducing a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent through simple eye contact. When used against animals, the eyes of the target take on the pattern of the users Sharingan while under its influence. When used in conjunction with the other aspects of the Sharingan, this allows the user to perfectly mimic every move their opponents make even before they do, making it appear as if the user can "see the future". More advanced Sharingan users can take the hypnosis ability even further by tricking or even trapping their opponent within an illusion. The potency of the Sharingan's illusion is dependent on the user's knowledge and skill with implementing genjutsu.
In addition to these commonly used techniques, the Sharingan allows the user to perform the genjutsu
Izanagi. Using Izanagi, the user can warp reality for a short amount of time, changing reality into illusion and illusion into reality. However, this technique has been dubbed kinjutsu, because use of it causes the user to go blind.
Although the Sharingan consumes the user's
chakra while active, the chakra levels that the user must exert is so insignificant that they can keep it active constantly. In fact,
Itachi Uchiha was so masterful of it, he was able to keep it active for most of the time, only once deactivating it after using
Tsukuyomi on Sasuke and
Amaterasu to escape
Jiraiya. However, when a Sharingan is transplanted to a non-Uchiha, the chakra drain is significant, leading them to cover it up when not in use, to stop the drain.

Itachi Uchiha's Mangekyō Sharingan.
The
Mangekyō Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼,
Mangekyō Sharingan; Literally meaning "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye") is a heightened form of
Sharingan. The Mangekyō Sharingan gives the user access to powerful and forbidden techniques. The Mangekyō Sharingan is distinguished from a normal Sharingan through its appearance, which changes the form of the tomoe seal. Unlike in the case of the Sharingan, the appearance of the Mangekyō Sharingan differs from user to user;
Kakashi Hatake's and
Itachi Uchiha's both resemble pinwheels,
Madara Uchiha's and his brother,
Izuna's look more like a detailed form of the basic three-tomoe Sharingan, and
Sasuke Uchiha's looks like three intersecting ellipses.
The Mangekyō Sharingan gives the user access to several powerful techniques, including the powerful fire jutsu
Amaterasu and the almost unbreakable genjutsu
Tsukuyomi. The Mangekyō Sharingan erodes the eyesight of its users, eventually causing blindness, which can be alleviated by obtaining another pair of Mangekyō Sharingan from a sibling. The new Sharingan is dubbed the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan (永遠の万華鏡写輪眼,
Eien no Mangekyō Sharingan).
Background and PersonalityHistory: Itachi was born into the
Uchiha clan and was praised by all as the best of his generation - a genius above all others. Even by the standards of the battle-adept Uchiha clan, Itachi's prowess far outshone them. However, not even his family, friends, or teachers could understand him. When he was only 4, Itachi had already witnessed countless lives lost due to the
Third Great Shinobi World War, which emotionally traumatized him and turned him into a pacifist. At age 7, he graduated from the
Ninja Academy at the top of his class after only one year, mastered the
Sharingan at age 8, passed the
Chūnin Exams at age 10, and became an
ANBU Captain at age 13. According to
Madara Uchiha, Itachi also had a lover, whom he killed during the Uchiha clan massacre.
He was praised highly by his father, who saw the family's future in Itachi, hence neglecting his other son - Itachi's younger brother, Sasuke. However, during this time Itachi showed great affection towards his little brother, Sasuke, and even encouraged his father to come to the Academy when Sasuke was enrolled, something their dad had otherwise forgotten, by saying that he would not go to an important mission that would establish Itachi a place in the ANBU ranks, otherwise.
When the Uchiha began planning to overthrow Konoha, Itachi, as an ANBU, was tasked with spying on the village. Knowing that a coup d'etat would only lead to another Ninja War, Itachi began spying on the Uchiha instead, passing on information to the Third Hokage and the other Konoha elders. After this he began to act strangely, not attending the clan meetings, speaking out against the clan, and becoming the prime suspect for the murder of his best friend,
Shisui Uchiha. The clan lost hope in Itachi, and his father began shifting his focus to Sasuke instead. Meanwhile, the Third's attempts to negotiate a bloodless end to hostilities between the two parties were proving ineffective, so, against the Third's wishes,
Danzō Shimura and the
Konoha Council ordered Itachi to wipe out the Uchiha.
Before the fateful night arrived, Itachi discovered the existence of
Madara Uchiha, who was attempting to rekindle the flames of war in Konoha. In return for not attacking Konoha, Itachi offered to help Madara claim vengeance against the Uchiha for turning their backs on him decades earlier. Madara agreed. Itachi slaughtered his entire clan overnight, sparing only Sasuke. Sasuke's life was worth more than the village to Itachi, and he could not follow through with the orders to kill him as well. Instead, he made himself out as a villain, who had killed their innocent family only to test his abilities. By doing so, he wanted Sasuke to take vengeance on him and become a hero to Konoha, thus redeeming the Uchiha name. He tortured Sasuke with his
Mangekyō Sharingan, and encouraged him to become strong enough to kill him and avenge their family. Hoping that his beloved little brother would someday be powerful enough to kill him, Itachi left the village as a traitor.
Knowing that Konoha would still want to eliminate Sasuke, Itachi pleaded with the
Third Hokage to keep Sasuke safe. He also threatened Danzō to not harm Sasuke or risk him revealing everything he knew about Konoha's secrets to enemy countries. Sasuke's safety was therefore secured, and Itachi returned to his original plan of becoming infamous for his slaughter of the Uchiha.
Itachi joined
Akatsuki in order to keep an eye on the organization, along with Madara Uchiha, in case either ever acted against Konoha, all the while planning for his death at Sasuke's hands. While a member of Akatsuki, Itachi was approached by
Orochimaru, who tried to steal his body to gain the Sharingan. Itachi trapped him in a genjutsu and severed his left hand as punishment, forcing Orochimaru to flee the organization. Sometime after joining Akatsuki, Itachi later helped recruit
Deidara, Orochimaru's replacement, by beating him in battle, after which Deidara swore vengeance against Itachi.
At some time, Itachi contracted a fatal illness, to which he kept himself alive through the intake of various medicines, in the hopes of living long enough to die by Sasuke's hands.
Personality:
Ever since his first appearance, Itachi had always been mysterious, and had acted as though he was hiding his true self. While flashbacks to his past showed that he was a compassionate brother and person, his later acts and claims made it seem that this was mostly just an act. But, surprisingly, he genuinely was the compassionate brother he had once claimed to be, although he hid this from the rest of the Akatsuki to protect Sasuke.
As a member of Akatsuki, he possessed incredible self-control of his emotions. He constantly displayed an emotionless personality. He only showed surprise when opponents proved more powerful or skilled than he had expected, and even then he didn't lose his composure. He did not possess any arrogance, and fully justified any statements he made about his power, even complimenting his opponents at times on their abilities.
In addition to being an extremely powerful ninja, Itachi had equally impressive intelligence, and was shown to be very wise. He was exceedingly sharp and observant to any situation at hand, as he was rarely surprised or caught off guard. He also displayed great intuition, as he was almost never deceived and even then almost instantly realized the truth. Despite his status as a wanted criminal, and having murdered a significant portion of his family, Itachi took no enjoyment in violence or combat, instead preferring to avoid battle or, if this was not possible, end it as quickly as he could.
Itachi's only initial interest was in Akatsuki's goals, and his only loyalties appeared to be to the organization and its members, seeming to put the organization's success and secrecy before everything else.As such, Itachi got along with his partner, Kisame, much better than most other Akatsuki members did with their own partners. Kisame appeared to have a deep loyalty to Itachi, immediately doing as he instructed and constantly looking out for his well-being. Itachi treated all of his fellow Akatsuki members to this same, more respectful personality, although his courtesy was rarely returned by the other members.
However, when he was in a genjutsu duel during his fight with Sasuke, he cruelly claimed he had only let Sasuke live so that he could take Sasuke's eyes and obtain his own Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, after which he then claimed the Uchiha clan had been nothing but tainted and evil, since many members would kill their friends to gain the Mangekyō Sharingan, and would take another Uchiha's eyes to make its power permanent. Once the genjutsu was released, he called it his true self, implying his calm, emotionless personality was also a facade. This persona was later revealed to be only an act to ensure that he would die by Sasuke's hands, his love for his younger brother being the fundamental aspect of his personality.
In the end, Itachi put all of his faith in Naruto, who he notes as the person most determined to save and protect Sasuke. After hearing Naruto's answer to keep protecting Sasuke and everyone in Konoha, Itachi gave him some of his power. He was very grateful towards Naruto's determination to save Sasuke, and was smiling after hearing Naruto's response. Itachi even trusted him enough to bring Sasuke back to the light. element: fire/water
Itachi's techniques
Amaterasu:
Amaterasu is the highest level
Fire Release technique, and according to
Zetsu one of the most powerful ninjutsu in existence.
[2] It is said to represent the "Material World and Light" (物質界と光,
Busshitsukai to Hikari), the antipode to
Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu of similar power and a fellow Mangekyō Sharingan
dōjutsu.
The jet-black flames of the Amaterasu, said to be as hot as the sun, ignite at the focus of the user's vision
[3]. They're unavoidable as long as the user keeps their eyes focused on their target. The flames are extremely powerful, capable of burning through anything and can even smother regular flames easily. Amaterasu is said to burn for seven days and seven nights, and cannot be extinguished with water or any other normal methods. However, the flames burn fairly slowly, allowing anyone struck by Amaterasu an opportunity to remove whatever clothing or body parts have been caught ablaze. Use of the technique also puts a great deal of strain on the user, usually causing their eyes to bleed.
Amaterasu was originally unique to
Itachi Uchiha, which he used with his right Mangekyō Sharingan. He is able to quell the flames to some extent. Prior to his death, Itachi
implanted some of the black flames into Sasuke's eye to be used upon
Madara Uchiha. Sasuke, after gaining his own Mangekyō Sharingan, is later able to use Amaterasu on his own. Sasuke's Amaterasu originates from his left eye, and
C indicates he is more skilled with it than Itachi; he can put out the flames with greater ease and can even manipulate the flames themselves as part of the "
Blaze" element.

Name
Clone Great Explosion: This jutsu works in combination with the
Shadow Clone Technique to create a shadow clone that will explode on command. The blast created is considerable, and could potentially kill an attacker engaged in hand-to-hand combat.
Crow Clone Technique: This jutsu appears to be similar to the
Water Clone Technique, with the exception that after the clone has been destroyed the body will disperse into a flock of crows, which can continue to speak and maintain a physical form. As it uses crows as a medium for the chakra, it requires less chakra than the
Shadow Clone Technique, while it still is able to use techniques. The capabilities of the crow form is unknown. However, Itachi was able to cast his
Sharingan genjutsu while in clone form, so it is likely no more limited than other such clone techniques.
Demonic Illusion Burning Paper Body: This genjutsu requires the
Sharingan and eye contact to be activated. The illusion traps the victim in a dark empty space where their body is made of paper that burns from toe to head while the user is watching. The purpose of this jutsu is to use the target's vision of their new form to reduce their dexterity, making it harder for the victim to battle or perform
hand seals.
Demonic Illusion Mirror Heaven and Earth Change: Using the
Sharingan's jutsu-copying abilities, the user can turn any
genjutsu back onto its original user.
Demonic Illusion: Shackling Stakes: The
genjutsu prevents the
Sharingan user's mind from being taken over by an opponent. The opponent is pierced and immobilized by illusory
yokes, making it an effective means for torture and interrogation. Also, this jutsu has the blood-red appearance of the background similar to
Tsukuyomi but the user and the victim do not appear in a grayscale, inverted color. It has only been used twice, by
Itachi and
Sasuke Uchiha both in response to
Orochimaru's
Living Corpse Reincarnation.
Dusk Crow Genjutsu: This unknown genjutsu can trap a victim in an illusion with no eye contact, similar to
Ephemeral. The genjutsu traps the victim in a torrent of crows, leaving them at the user's mercy.
Ephemeral: Itachi activates this technique by simply pointing at his target. Crows flock from Itachi and turn into shuriken that bombard the opponent. They then experience the sensation of their body parts turning into their closest friends.
Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique:
After performing the necessary hand seals, a ninja inhales air via their mouth and, gather up chakra in their chest, then spews a large fireball from their mouth after blowing through a ring made by the thumb and index finger of the user, incinerating everything in range.
Sasuke is seen doing this technique without making a ring over his mouth. The fireball may ignite externally (as evidenced by
Kakashi Hatake's ability to use the jutsu without burning his mask, but may also be seen as pulling it down to blow out the fireball).
According to
Kakashi Hatake (in the anime Part II), the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique was originally created by the
Uchiha clan, becoming one of their favorite moves with which they became very adept with. The
Uchiha clan also uses the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique as a "
coming of age" technique. This technique apparently requires more than average chakra reserves and most
Genin should not be able to do this technique.
Fire Release: Phoenix Immortal Fire Technique: This jutsu sends multiple balls of fire at a target. It is also possible to hide shuriken within the fireballs, creating an unexpected secondary surprise attack. For the most part, however, this jutsu is used as a distraction.
Shadow Clone Technique:
Similar to the
Clone Technique, this jutsu creates clones of the user. Unlike the Clone Technique, these clones are actual copies, not illusions. The user's
chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing jutsu on their own and can even bleed, but will usually disperse after one or two solid blows. They can also disperse on their own. The clones will be created in roughly the same condition as the original.
Unlike other clone techniques, they can't be detected by the
Byakugan because the clones have the exact same amount of chakra and aren't made from any other substance, making them indistinguishable from the actual person. In the anime,
Sasuke Uchiha claims that the
Sharingan can distinguish clones from the original, however various events throughout the series seem to indicate that this is not the case, implying that the Sharingan was merely used to keep track of the original's movements.
Susanoo: Susanoo is a technique that creates a spiritual humanoid being. The spirit is gigantic and surrounds and protects the user. It is the third ability granted by the
Mangekyō Sharingan, after
Amaterasu and
Tsukuyomi have been awakened.
According to
Madara Uchiha, for a Sharingan user to activate the Susanoo is a rarity.Like the other techniques granted by the Mangekyō Sharingan, the user is strained while using Susanoo because they must act as a medium for the spirit, allowing it to consume their life force energy. Sasuke describes it as feeling pain in every cell in one's body, and while Itachi was close to death, it slowly deteriorated. Both Itachi and Sasuke are able to summon the spirit, though they differ in appearance. They both begin by forming a large skeleton with muscle tissue around the user. Even in an imperfect state, the bones can act as armor for the user and it is capable of regenerating as long as the user has the energy to spare.
Transcription Seal: Amaterasu: This is a technique that seals the technique
Amaterasu within the
Sharingan of another person. After being sealed within the person it is involuntarily activated when certain conditions are met. Itachi used this technique on his brother
Sasuke Uchiha as a fail safe against
Madara Uchiha should the two ever meet. Upon seeing Madara's Sharingan, Sasuke's eye took the form of Itachi's
Mangekyō Sharingan and used Amaterasu on Madara, though it did not succeed in killing him.
Tsukuyomi:
According to
Zetsu, Tsukuyomi is one of the most powerful genjutsu in existence. It is unique to the Uchiha clan and only those with the
Mangekyō Sharingan can perform it. It is said to represent the "Spiritual World and Darkness" (精神界と闇,
Seishinkai to Yami), the antipode to
Amaterasu, a ninjutsu of similar power.
Tsukuyomi requires eye contact to be performed. When executed, the jutsu traps the target in an illusion that is completely controlled by the user. When Itachi prowess with the technique has allowed his to alter the perception of time with ease within the genjutsu to make it seem to last for days when in fact it only lasts a few moments. This allows him to torture the target for what seems like days on end, causing mental trauma that will render them unable to fight for an extensive period of time. Only
Tsunade has been shown capable of curing this psychological damage.
Danzō denounced Sasuke's use of genjutsu as inferior.
In the anime during Part I, Itachi's use of Tsukuyomi typically featured a red moon casting a red light throughout the illusion with a cloudy atmosphere, giving the background a blood-red appearance while the victim within the illusion is in a grayscale, inverted color.
Such a powerful technique is not without its disadvantages, however. Due to the complexity of the illusion and the quickness with which it is executed, an enormous amount of chakra is necessary but had little to no effect on the stress that is put on the eyes, leaving Itachi perfectly fine after performing it despite his loss of chakra. According to Kakashi, Itachi's Tsukuyomi can only be broken by a Sharingan user that shares the same blood as him; as demonstrated when Sasuke overcame Itachi's Tsukuyomi in their battle.
According to
Danzō, Sasuke cannot alter a person's perception of time with Tsukuyomi like Itachi could
Madara Uchiha's
Moon's Eye Plan involves acquiring the
Ten-Tailed Beast's power and body in the
moon, which allows him to cast an "Infinite Tsukuyomi" (無限月読,
Mugen Tsukuyomi) throughout the entire world, effectively letting him conquer it.
Water Clone Technique: The Water Clone Technique is similar to the
Shadow Clone Technique except it creates clones out of water. Like other solid clone techniques, the clones can be used to perform tasks the user is unable or unwilling to do for themselves. The range of the clone is limited however, as it can not travel very far from the original body. Additionally, water clones only have one-tenth of the original person's power, as stated by Haku. Like other clone techniques, if the water clones are injured enough they will revert back to normal water.
Water Release: Water Fang Bullet: This jutsu creates a circle of crushing water spikes around the opponent. It is very difficult to evade, however it will also require a sufficient water source nearby the target, preferably right below it.
